Gentle Reader,

With all the shows in Edinburgh at Festival time, we realize that it is overwhelming to make your decisions about what to see without good information. And good information is what we offer you here. As persons of honor, we make no secret that we want to persuade you to select An Evening at Pemberley as one of your choices at the Fringe. As persons of reason, we invite you to freely sample a bit of this music so that you can make an informed choice.

Today, we have for you a one-minute excerpt from Miss Patrice Boyd's CD of the full programme, An Evening at Pemberley: The Music of Jane Austen's Heroines as she sings an especially beautiful composition by Handel:

Sweet Bird
(L'Allegro, Il Pensieroso)

And do enjoy this sample of a lovely work by Mozart, which you may remember from the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice:
Voi che sapete
(Le nozze di Figaro)

(For most individuals with a fast connection, clicking the round button will instantaneously play the sample as streaming audio. If your connection is a bit slow, there may be a slight delay or choppy sound until enough of the file has streamed to your computer to play properly, but once streamed, replaying should occur with high fidelity. Click the button again to stop. If you cannot see the buttons, your security software has blocked the Active X technology used. Fear not! These files are safe to approve. If you hear nothing when you click the button, your computer's sound may be muted; adjust the volume as necessary. If you prefer a more traditional approach to playing the music, you may simply download this same excerpt of Handel's Sweet Bird to play on your media player of choice.)

We trust that you will enjoy these snippets of lovely music that our guests will hear performed in full in the wonderful acoustics and historic Georgian-era architecture of St. Andrew's and St. George's church in Edinburgh, Scotland. Feel free to share them with friends and family to add a bit of musical beauty to their day.

O, but there is so much more than these two brief clips!

At the live performances, Jane Austen fans will delight as Miss Boyd reveals how each of her musical selections relates to Austen's fictional characters and their situations. Her love of Jane Austen's fiction led her to create this original well-researched programme. As she is a professional opera singer, you can hear for yourself the fine quality of her voice as she performs these works.
CD available at performances
The CD of this programme will available at the Edinburgh performances at a special concert price: only £5 for ticket holders. Click the image to see the full programme of music.
Browse the full programme to see the other selections that will be performed live in Edinburgh. Mozart, Haydn, Handel, Bishop, Purcell, and others are all included on Patrice Boyd's CD, which was professionally recorded in New York, NY.

And that is not our only persuasion. Edinburgh audiences will be the first in Europe to have opportunity to take home this rare CD: it will be placed on sale to our audiences, on a first-come, first served basis -- and at an attractive concert discount for ticket holders. We believe it is a remarkable performance that invites repeated listening by classical music aficionados and Jane Austen fans alike.

Investigate the show's home page and click other links for much more information, photographs and for every credential you require to feel confident in your decision to join us at Pemberley. Why not Tell Friends about this website now so your group can more easily make plans?

So many delightful new friends are attracted to An Evening at Pemberley: The Music of Jane Austen's Heroines by their love of Jane Austen's works, which this musical programme so vividly evokes! And so many other enlightened individuals come to take in these splendidly performed works of classical music by Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Haydn and others. And it is our privilege to see so many loving couples, families, and friends from all walks of life enjoy this programme together.

Yet, there are only two performances: Aug 8 and 11, both at 7:30 p.m. And although Pemberley's performance space is large, seating is not unlimited.

Before the Fringe Office's ticketing difficulties we were informed that advance reservations for An Evening at Pemberley: The Music of Jane Austen's Heroines were strong. Do be forwarned: all performances in America were sold out and the CD sold out as well. We believe the Edinburgh performances are heading towards similar popularity; so do remember: booking and collecting your tickets in advance may save you queue time. Gentle Reader, our past experience leads us to advise you that it is wisest to book your tickets to our performances early to avoid disappointment.

Happy news: Those of you who wish to collect tickets for An Evening at Pemberley in advance can do so beginning Monday, August 4th. On that date, the box office at our venue, St. Andrew's and St. George's church, will open for in-person sales. You can already order by telephone: 0131 225-3847 during ordinary office hours.

We apologize for any inconveniences and ask for your kind patience and persistence -- our venue is a gentle church, hosting 27 Fringe events. Performance Description
The programme features operatic arias from Jane Austen's world, sung by international coloratura soprano Patrice Boyd while accompanied by piano and flute.

Each selection illustrates the social context of Jane Austen's era of life and is specifically related to her fictional heroines or to the situations they faced.

Each selection also represents music that actual young women of marriageable age would have typically chosen to perform at social gatherings in private homes 200 years ago. Some are splendid, some are clever, but each song brings the love, passions, and dilemmas of the Georgian and Regency eras alive for today's audiences to experience firsthand.

This is the music that enchanted Mr. Darcy -- and his real-life counterparts too. Come and enjoy a concert evening unlike any other.

Historical music includes works by Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Purcell, Bishop, and Anonymous 18th century French composers. Performed by Miss Boyd in period-styled dress in a genuine Georgian-era venue.(see programme details)
